Installing a solar panel system in our homes comes with so many benefits which help lives as well. That while I come up with this post on how to install a solar panel system in our home. The first step in making our home comfortable is having a steady power supply. Buying diesel generators for home consumption solves the problem to some extent. But thinking the cost of running a diesel generator is too high and also does not guarantee us of steady power supply. But thinking about installing a solar panel system, you see is more economical compared to others. And serve us with a steady power supply all the time.

The solar panel system is what all homes and offices need to have, as it is environmentally friendly and gives electricity all the time.

Materials required for the solar system installation.

  • DC batteries.

The inverter.

These are the device which converts DC to AC. Most of our appliances at home are design to run on AC. So. This particular device converts the DC from the solar batteries into AC which is then being utilized in the home.

The inverter is one of the important devices we can not overlook when installing a solar system. And this inverter comes in different types and ratings. They are rated in Volt and KVA. It is the Volt of the inverter that determines the battery bank. But the formula there is that the Volt of the inverter must be the same as the Volt of the batteries. let, for instance, am having a 24V inverter. For the inverter to work, I shall also have a 24V battery to start the inverter.

As we all know, the major work of solar panels is to convert sun energy to electrical energy. The panels are exposed to sunlight to be able to absorb sunlight and convert it to electrical energy. After converting it to electrical energy, the energy is used to introduce a charge to the solar batteries. So it is the panels that keep the solar batteries charge.

To install the solar panels, the number, and amperage of the DC batteries available matter a lot. So make sure the number of panels available, can fully charge the DC batteries in a day. Undercharging and overcharging the batteries are not healthy for the system. So your battery bank, you will know how to run the connections of the panels, if it should be in series, parallel, or even series-parallel.

It is the work of the charge controller to limit the excessive charge of the batteries. The controller serves as a gateway between the solar panel system and the batteries. It receives the charges from the panels and passes them through the batteries, when the batteries are fully charged, the charge controller then stops passing the charge to the batteries again. Till the batteries start to run down before the controller starts to allow it to state charging.

The battery serves as a power reservoir for the solar system. The whole power and the charges are stored on the battery banks. Is from these battery banks that the inverter receives the energy it converts to AC. How long the system can last during operation is determined by the battery banks.

In the connection of the battery bank, the type of inverter to be used is considered. Let’s say we are to design a battery bank of a 48-Volt inverter. Solar batteries are mostly designed to be 12-Volt. So we will be needing four (4) 12-Volt batteries connected in series to connect the inverter. If we decide to add more batteries to increase the amperage, extra four batteries connected in series are then connected in parallel with the four we are having.

To install solar panel systems there are always steps to follow while installing them, so as not to damage materials. Cost of solar materials is expensive and we won’t afford to damage them. Then use cables and connects the terminals of the panels running the cable to the place the battery will be permanently kept. While doing so always take note of the polarity of the terminals not to interchange them or all the two-wire comes in contact with each other.

Steps 2. Battery bank connections.

Just as I have mentioned earlier, the battery too should be arranged and connected to give the same voltage of the inverter. But before then, make sure to place the batteries in a well-ventilated area for the safety of the batteries. And avoid keeping them on a bar floor. Is always advisable to construct a battery rank and load the batteries on the rank.

Note: be careful while connecting the batteries as a short circuit of the battery terminals can cause exploration.

If you are not too perfect in connection with the batteries. i.e if it has been long you run the connections. I advise you to draft the connection on paper and follow it to run the connections to avoid making mistakes.

Easy ways of installing battery in series and parallel connection.

So as we are using a 24-volt inverter for illustrations, two 12 volt batteries shall be connected in series. To add more batteries, just connect another two in series and connect in parallel to the other two in series.

Step 3. Connection of the battery banks to the inverter.

The battery should be connected directly to the inverter battery terminals. The black terminal connects to the black terminal of the battery and the red terminal to the positive side of the battery. Always make sure to make all the connections to be firm to avoid partial contact later after installations.

NOTE: When connecting the inverter to the battery, there is always a spark on the terminal during the time of connecting the second wire of the inverter. The spark is normal and it shows the inverter is in good condition.

step 4. connect the battery bank to the charge controller.

from the battery bank, where the inverter battery wire is connected, connect a wire from there to the charge controller. On the charge controller are so many ports. The panel ports, battery port, and DC bulb ports. All these are labeled on the charge controller. So make a connection from the battery bank to the battery port on the charge controller.

NOTE: Don’t interchange the polarity of the battery when connecting to the charge controller. And always connect the battery to the charge controller first before connecting the panels.

The solar charge controller should be of appropriate ratings to suit the installations. It should be able to withstand the power of the panel and that of the battery.

Step 5. Connect the solar panel system to the charge controller.

after assembling and running the connection of the panel. The black and red terminal of the panels should be connected to the charge controller.

Use the panel wire and connect the charge controller. Putting the red to the positive side and black to the negative side in the controller.

I’m mediately after connecting the panels, the charge controller starts to indicate the battery is charging and the level of the battery.

Step 5. connect the load to the inverter.

This is the last step, which is the loading of the inverter. At the back of the inverter is AC terminal sockets. From the socket are where the load from home or the office are connected to. Allow the battery charge for a 24hrs before the solar system becomes set to use.
