During the heat periods, is always challenging to be in a room where there is no fan or air conditioner. Ceiling fans are more reliable than standing fans but I have come to find out that people go for standing fans because of the complexity of installing ceiling fans. While some prefer standing fans because the height of their ceiling may not be high enough to hang a ceiling fan on them.

You don’t have to be a college graduate or a technician before you understand how to install fans. Just pay attention as I narrate to you how it is done. Is just a simple DIY anybody can practice.

Tools needed for the installation of a ceiling fan.

Is expected we have the following tools before wanting to install fans. It is just a common tool that we are familiar with and makes use of on our DIY projects.

  • SPANNER:
  • SCREWDRIVERS SET:
  • ELECTRICAL KNIFE:
  • ELECTRICAL PILER:
  • HACKSAW AND BLADE:
  • FISHING TAPE:
  • INSULATING TAPE:

Things to consider before starting the installation of a ceiling fan.

  • Check if the provision of where to hang the ceiling fan is made in the room

some houses have a fan hook installed in all the rooms whereas some don’t have the provisions. If your room has a ceiling hook installed already, then you are in a better position but when is not, you don’t need to worry more about it, as it can still be installed. It will only take you extra time make the installation of the hook or the base plate of the ceiling fan.

  • Check to know if the ceiling fan electrical wiring is already made on the house.

When the ceiling fan hook is already installed in the room, check beside the ceiling fan hook in the ceiling to know be there is a ceiling rose/ junction box. If there is a junction box beside it, open the box to know if the wire for the fan has already been fished out.

But when there is no junction box beside it, or the wire has not been fished out, then it means the box will be fixed and the wire fished before or after installing the fan.

Procedures to install an electrical ceiling fan.

To wire and install an electrical ceiling fan the following procedures should follow strictly.

Mounting of ceiling fan hook/base plates

Ceiling fan hook

the fan hook is a metallic C shape structure where the fan hangs on. This hook comes in different types depending on the type of fan you purchase. If your room already have the hook installed on them, then you will skip this step to next step. Those leaving on a concrete roof house house are likely to have this hooks already fixed on their rooms.

Purchase the ceiling fan hook and installed them in the position you want the ceiling fan to be fixed. Some ceiling fans come with hanging plates as their hanging hook. The hook is installed to the ceiling using bolts and nuts. Spanners are used to tighten it making sure is very firm.

NOTE: the fan hook must be firmly tightened to the ceiling to withstand the vibration of the fan. To prevent the fan from falling during operation.

There is a nut shape rubber from the package of the fan. This rubber serves as a shock absorber during the operation of the fan. So insert the rubber into the C shape of the hook on the ceiling. This rubber nut prevents the fan from dangling or making irregular rotations during the operation.

Fixing and assembling the ceiling fan.

To assemble the fan, unbox the fan package. On the package, the fan capacitor and the connection are already fixed and packaged. Then using the screw nails fix the fan blade making sure is firm and tight.

The fan blades need to be tightened well to prevent it from losing during its operation after installation. So make use a spanner and screwdriver to tighten it.

Installation of ceiling fan

Fix the fan rod to the base of the ceiling fan and tighten it up with bolts. This rod can be adjusted or extended by cutting or extending the rod. The rod is where the fan is right to the hook in the ceiling.

After fixing the fan rod of the fan, use the cover rubber of the fan to cover the ceiling fan capacitors and its wiring up. Fix its second hook to the rod and hang it on the ceiling fan hook on the ceiling.

Tighten its nuts crossing the nuts with its pins to prevent the nuts from slacking back to lose when the fan is running.

Connecting the fan to electricity.

On the ceiling fan motor beside the capacitor is where the live and neutral wire is connected. So using a flexible wire, connect the live wire and the neutral to the junction box wire respectively. Live to live and neutral to neutral. Do short-circuit the live and neutral wire of the fan.

After connecting the wires to the junction box, use a ceiling rose to cover the box to make it look neat and beautiful. Then proceed to install the fan speed control.

wiring the supply and regulator of the fan.

This is in a situation where the fan wiring has not been made before. It can be in a new office or shop that don’t have ceiling fan wiring before.

from the distribution board, run two cables black and red. Take the red cable to the area where you want the fan regulator to be. And run a black cable (neutral) to the position where the ceiling fan is mounted or will be mounted. Run another red cable from the fan regulator side to the junction box is the ceiling fan.

After that, check the regulator side and verify if is two red cables that are there. Go to the ceiling fan junction box side and verify again it is a black and a red cable that are there. Now you have got the connection and are almost set to enjoy your ceiling fan.

On the ceiling fan box, side connect the live terminal of the ceiling fan to the red cable inside the junction box and do the same to the neutral wire of the fan by connecting it too to the black cable inside the box. Use the insulation tape to tape the joining and nearly park them inside the box and cover them using cover box or ceiling rose.

Connect the black cable from the distribution board to the black terminal of the ceiling fan.

Connect the red cable from the distribution board to one of the fan regulator terminals and contract the second red wire from the fan junction box to the second terminal of the regulator.
